Designing a Bold Beverage Label That Still Reads Clearly on Shelf
Bombay Pop is a flavored sparkling beverage brand inspired by vibrant, modern Indian flavors. The goal for this project was to create a label that immediately stands out on shelf while still maintaining clarity, balance, and structure in a highly competitive beverage space.
One of the biggest challenges with bold, culturally inspired brands is finding the right balance. It’s easy to lean too far into over-decoration and lose readability, or play it too safe and lose what makes the product unique.
The Challenge
- Maintaining strong shelf readability despite detailed artwork
- Creating distinct flavor differentiation across SKUs without losing brand consistency
- Incorporating ornamental and architectural elements without overwhelming the hierarchy
- Ensuring the label remains clean and production-ready, not just visually appealing
The Approach
This label was built to strike that balance from the start, constrained yet bold and unique.
The visual direction combines:
- Expressive, high-energy color inspired by the flavor profiles
- Metallic foil accents that not only attracts attention, but adds to the premium feel of the brand
- Subtle pattern work that adds depth without competing with the core information
- Clean, intentional typography that keeps the product easy to read on shelf
Instead of layering elements for the sake of visual interest, each component was simplified and structured to support quick recognition and brand consistency across future SKUs.
Just as important, the label was developed with real production in mind. Layout, spacing, and hierarchy were all built to align with FDA labeling requirements and typical print constraints, helping ensure a smooth transition from concept to final production files.
The Outcome
The final Bombay Pop label system:
- Feels bold, vibrant, and culturally expressive
- Maintains strong readability in a crowded retail environment
- Scales cleanly across multiple flavors
- Translates directly from concept to print without friction
